Sadio Mane could follow Philippe Coutinho in discovering brutal Liverpool truth
It remains to be seen as to who the real winner of Sadio Mane's summer departure will be.
The Senegalese star left Liverpool to join Bayern Munich in a package worth £35m, having won every trophy available to him in England as well as on the European stage. For Mane, the timing felt right for a new challenge away from the club.
Although supporters were sad to see the 30-year-old leave Anfield after becoming such an influential figure during his six-year spell, Mane's departure was certainly amicable and did not end on the same sour note as others who have pursued careers away from Merseyside in recent years.
Joe Gomez explains why he couldn't 'walk away' from Liverpool and addresses Real Madrid and Aston Villa transfer rumours
If there’s one player in the Liverpool squad who knows all about overcoming an onerous challenge, it’s Joe Gomez.
Three times in his Anfield career, the defender has found himself facing the long road to recovery from serious injury while then having to win back his place in the first team. He had been successful in the pursuit when returning from a cruciate ligament injury in 2015 and then a broken leg three years later.
While there was a level of surprise when it was announced earlier this month that the player had signed a new five-year contract at Anfield, he admits walking away from the task of elbowing his way back into Jurgen Klopp’s side remains far less appealing than the alternative.
Ian Doyle has the exclusive interview.
