SADC Summit To Address Mpox Outbreaks In Africa

African leaders are set to convene in Zimbabwe for the Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit, where the focus is expected to be on the escalating mpox outbreaks across the continent. The World Health Organization recently declared the mpox outbreaks in Africa a global health emergency, with Congo reporting over 90% of cases. This infectious disease, previously concentrated in central and West Africa, has now spread to more than a dozen African countries, raising concerns about its potential to cross international borders.

Of particular concern is a new, potentially more infectious form of mpox identified in Congo. The situation has prompted calls for heightened vigilance and coordinated efforts to contain the spread of the disease. South Africa's Democratic Alliance party has urged delegates at the summit to address the mpox issue, emphasizing the need for proactive measures in light of Congo's significant outbreak.

However, the summit is also overshadowed by international concerns regarding the human rights record of Zimbabwe, the host country. The United Nations and various human rights groups have criticized the Zimbabwean government for an alleged political crackdown, citing numerous arrests of activists and opposition members. Reports of enforced disappearances, torture, and other human rights violations have drawn condemnation from the international community.

Despite these criticisms, Zimbabwe's President, Emmerson Mnangagwa, is poised to assume the rotational leadership of SADC. While preparations for the summit in Harare include infrastructure improvements and promises of uninterrupted services for delegates, the lack of diplomatic pressure on Zimbabwe's administration has raised questions about the willingness of regional leaders to address human rights issues.

Analysts suggest that the summit may sidestep contentious issues, focusing instead on regional cooperation and shared challenges such as the mpox outbreaks. The reluctance of SADC members to confront Zimbabwe over its rights record underscores the complexities of balancing political considerations with human rights concerns in the region.

As African leaders gather for the SADC summit, the dual challenges of addressing public health crises and upholding human rights standards present a test of the organization's commitment to promoting stability and well-being across the continent.
