The Saatva Latex Hybrid and Birch Natural Mattress are two of our favorite latex mattresses right now, boosting exceptional cooling power, anti-allergen properties and glistening sustainable credentials.
Our top picks in this year's best mattress for all sleepers guide have their own advantages, but not all manufacturers have jumped on the natural latex bandwagon yet. latex is a foam material derived from the sap of rubber trees and it is used in mattresses due to its natural bounce, durability and ability to provide a responsive support with good pressure relief. Of course, top-rated brands Saatva and Birch by Helix are ahead of the game. Both combine layers of natural latex with springs to create a supportive, responsive surface that will suit many types of sleepers.
As organic latex hybrids, these two mattresses have many similarities and they are both discounted in this year's extended Cyber Monday mattress sales, putting us in a toss-up. So, here we'll break down the differences between the two to help you decide which is the better deal to snap up. Without further ado, our latex hybrid mattress head-to-head commences...
Saatva Latex Hybrid vs Birch Natural Mattress: Price & Trial
- Both mattresses are discounted in extended Cyber Monday sales
- Saatva offers a 365-night trial and lifetime warranty
- Birch offers a 100-night trial and 25 year warranty
From the gurus behind our #1 mattress of the year, the Saatva Classic, the Saatva Latex Hybrid is built from premium materials. So, it's no surprise that it comes with a premium price tag to match. At full MSRP, the Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress starts at $1,595 for a twin. But the current Saatva mattress sale knocks $400 off all sizes of this luxury hybrid, bringing a queen to $1,995 (was $2,395) — that's the best price we've seen since Labor Day this year.
Plus, you'll benefit from Saatva's exclusive service which includes a 365-night trial, lifetime warranty and free White Glove delivery (which includes old bed removal), taking the stress out of setting up your new bed and disposing of your old one.
As a popular, high-quality organic mattress, the Birch Natural Mattress by Helix is not a budget buy either. At full price it is a premium model, but more or less constant sales knock at least 20% off, making it much more affordable.
There is 25% off in the Cyber Monday sale that's still live, bringing a queen to $1,405 (was $1,873.33). This is neither particularly cheap nor overly priced for an organic mattress. For reference, an Awara Natural Hybrid is usually $,1099 for a queen size, yet a queen size Avocado Green will set you back $1,999 are both highly-rated organic mattresses.
With Birch you'll get extra perks including two free Eco-Rest pillows and complimentary shipping. Unlike Saatva, there is a fee for mattress setup and removal.
Saatva Latex Hybrid vs Birch Natural Mattress: Materials & Design
- Both are hybrid mattresses with natural latex foam
- The Saatva is 12" tall with five layers
- The Birch is 11" tall with six layers
Both the Saatva Latex Hybrid and Birch Natural Mattress are crafted from a combination of premium latex and a layer of individually encased coils to enhance these properties.
Starting with the Saatva, you'll find a hand-tufted cushioned top made with breathable, hypoallergic cotton followed by a blanket of moisture-wicking New Zealand wool.
Next comes a 3" layer of 5-zone natural latex providing buoyancy, support and pressure relief. Then there's the coil layer made from recycled steel, which promotes this organic mattress' eco-credentials, enhances lumbar support and minimizes motion transfer.
On to the Birch Natural Mattress, there's a cover made with Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) Certified cotton, which is breathable and soft touch, followed by fire retardant and naturally elastic wool. Then comes the eco-INSTITUT certified natural latex to cushion pressure points, beneath which is a support layer of 1,000 individually wrapped coils to help cradle your body and limit motion.
Because of the extra inch in thickness, we'd say the Saatva will offer more support for heavier sleepers, but both will be comfortable beds for nearly all types of sleepers.
Saatva Latex Hybrid vs Birch Natural Mattress: Comfort & Support
- The Saatva is a medium-firm mattress with a 6/10 firmness rating
- The Birch is also medium-firm with a 6-7/10 firmness rating
- Both are suitable for combination sleepers and couples with different sleep types
While we’re yet to review the Saatva Latex Hybrid, the manufacturers give it a 6 out of 10 for firmness, which puts it squarely into the medium-firm camp. This makes it particularly suited to side and back sleepers, but it is also a good choice for combination sleepers and couples who can't agree on firmness. Stomach sleepers or heavier weight sleepers might benefit from a firmer surface.
The responsive coils combined with the slight bounce of latex offers an exceptional balance of lumbar support and pressure relief, making it a great mattress for back pain. The latex layer contours to your body, helping cushion pressure points and keep your spine in correct alignment.
Moreover, the manufacture says the Birch Natural Mattress ranges from 6 to 7 out of 10 for firmness and our tester in our Birch Natural Mattress review found it to be smack-bang in the middle, giving it a 6.5 out of 10.
They also thought the Birch was taut and bouncy and tried all sleeping positions to gauge the level of comfort and support in each. They say it has "a bit of give" as the mattress surface moulds to your body. But it gives more of a lifting feeling rather than the sink-in feeling offered by the best memory foam mattresses. The Birch was most comfortable while in a back and stomach sleeping position and was ideal for switching between positions thanks to its extra bounce.
Although some of the best mattresses for side sleepers are softer than both of these models, side sleepers will still find the Saatva Latex Hybrid and the Birch Natural Mattress very comfortable, thanks to the latex that's there to provide adequate cushioning for the shoulders and hips.
Saatva Latex Hybrid vs Birch Natural Mattress: Temperature regulation
- Hybrid mattresses are cooler by design
- Both mattresses boast a layer of latex which is naturally cooling
- Both harness the cooling power of natural wool
The best hybrid mattresses have plenty of airflow. And both the Saatva and Birch harness the natural cooling powers of organic wool and latex, as well as their breathable hybrid construction.
We call the Latex Hybrid the best Saatva mattress for hot sleepers, on par with some of the best cooling mattresses out there. Alongside, the cooling properties of organic cotton, wool and latex, it has vented airflow channels running through the latex layer for enhanced breathability and cooling.
Meanwhile the Birch's cooling prowess comes from the breathability of natural latex, the hygroscopic nature of wool and moisture-wicking capabilities of its cotton cover. Not forgetting the extra airflow supplied by the coil layer. Keeping our tester, who tends to run hot at night, cool in Southern California spring, the Birch scored a glistening 5 out of 5 for temperature regulation in our review.
All in all, both of these latex hybrids are strong mattress contenders for year-round hot sleepers. But we think the Saatva will be ever so slightly more effective at temperature regulation, so a better choice for those experiencing hot flashes.
