Tough new hoon driving laws are set to come into force in South Australia giving police the power to ban some people from the road immediately.

The laws create a new offence of driving at extreme speed, carrying a three-year maximum jail sentence, when they take effect from Monday.

As part of the changes, a person charged with causing death by dangerous driving will have their licence suspended immediately and police can suspend or disqualify the licence of someone suspected of driving at extreme speed.

The extreme speed provisions apply to anyone caught driving at either 55km/h over the limit in a 60 zone or 80km/h above the limit in a zone above 60.

As well as possible jail time, motorists found guilty of driving at extreme speed face a mandatory two-year licence disqualification for a first offence, and a five-year licence disqualification for any subsequent offence.

"Hoons are a menace on the roads and their presence can pose a very real threat to all road users," Attorney-General Kyam Maher said.

"Too often we've seen heartbreaking stories of people who have lost loved ones due to the careless actions of others."
