SA reports 1296 virus cases, four deaths

Alcohol sales are restricted in Port Augusta due to problems associated with lockdowns and floods. (AAP)

South Australia has reported another 1296 COVID-19 cases along with four more deaths.

SA Health said the new cases left the total number of active infections at 14,159.

There are 204 people in hospital, down from 224 on Monday, including 15 in intensive care where two are on a ventilator.

The new figures came as the state's Liquor and Gambling Commissioner imposed restrictions on the sale of alcohol in Port Augusta in response to police reports of increased anti-social behaviour, partly attributed to COVID-19 lockdowns.

"Lockdowns in remote communities, coupled with extreme weather blocking highways to the north and west of Port Augusta has resulted in an increased population of non-residents unable to return home," the commissioner said in a statement.

Under the restrictions, bottle shops are not permitted to open for trade before 11am and customers will be limited to purchasing one bottle of spirits or one two-litre cask of wine or one bottle of fortified wine.

Photo identification will be required for all purchases and details will be recorded in a register.

The measures took effect at midday on Tuesday and will remain in place for two weeks.
