SA drops COVID-19 mask mandate but many businesses to keep rule in place

With the Easter long weekend festivities underway, South Australia's prolonged mask-wearing regime has come to an end.

QR check-ins have also been scrapped, but Premier Peter Malinauskas has previously said there was a chance they may return.

Masks will still be required in high-risk settings such as hospitals, aged care centres and residential disability facilities, as well as on public transport and in ride-sharing vehicles.

Mr Malinauskas said the relaxation of mask rules was about reinstating choice.

"I think a lot of South Australians are very relieved they have a few more options available to them," he said.

"Of course, if South Australians want to continue to wear masks, they really have that choice."

'I'll make sure they're still wearing their mask'

Some businesses, such as Adelaide massage and beauty store Bodywork Place, are looking to enforce the use of masks despite the mandate being dropped.

The store's Tiffany Su said the move was designed to keep staff and patrons safe.

"I'll make sure they're still wearing their mask when they're talking to us because we're very close to them, like we're doing the massage and beauty stuff," Ms Su said.

Revolución Mexicana restaurant owner Fernando Gutierrez said he would not go as far as enforcing the use of masks, but he hoped his customers still wore them.

"I personally would prefer [that] for everyone's safety," Mr Gutierrez said.

"Everyone knows that the cases soar up [without masks].

"I know that a lot of them might get upset if I try to enforce something that by law is [optional]. I can't do anything."

"I personally believe that they should wait another week or two [before relaxing the rules]."

SA's mask requirements have been among the strictest in the country.

They have been in place since mid-2021 — around the time of the July lockdown.

A decision on whether masks will be still be required in schools will be made within weeks, before the school holidays end.

Medical experts, including the Australian Medical Association, have said mask rules should be some of the last to be relaxed to prevent hospital case numbers rising.
