Move aside Apple. There's a new group of Magnificent Seven stocks in the S&P 500.
Security firm Palantir joins Walmart, JPMorgan Chase and Visa as this year's top drivers of market value. As a group they accounted for 47% of the S&P 500's $2.1 trillion gain in market capitalization, says an Investor's Business Daily analysis of data from S&P Global Market Intelligence and MarketSurge.
Gone from this year's Magnificent Seven are Apple, Microsoft, Tesla and Alphabet. All four of those former top stocks of 2024 are down so far this year.
"This year's Mag Seven performance looks much different than last year," said Adam Turnquist, chief technical strategist for LPL Financial.
Nearly Half The S&P 500's Gains From Seven Stocks?
A handful of stocks are driving most of the S&P 500's gains. But at least it's a different handful.
Walmart is the top driver among the new Magnificent Seven. Its shares are up 15.4% this year. That gain added $112 billion in market value or 5.3% of all the year's gain in the S&P 500. Walmart now has an RS Rating of 94. And analysts are bullish on earnings. They're calling for 13% growth in 2025 and 11% growth in 2026. That might lift the stock's EPS Rating of 84.
Palantir is another big newcomer to the Magnificent Seven. Its shares are up nearly 60% this year, adding $98.3 billion in market value. That's nearly 5% of the S&P 500's total market gain. Additionally, the stock earned a 99 RS Rating, as it's now the top-performing stock in the S&P 500. Analysts think profit will rise 30% in 2025 and 25% in 2026.
Not All Newcomers
Some of last year's S&P 500 Magnificent Seven are making a repeat appearance. Meta Platforms is the best example.
Shares of the social media giant are up 26.2% this year. That alone adds $394.3 billion in market value. That's more than any other S&P 500 stock and nearly 19% of the S&P 500's total gain this year.
Investors hope the company will benefit from lighter regulation. The stock already carries an RS Rating of 92. And analysts think profit will rise 5% in 2025 and 14% in 2026.
So while the Magnificent Seven have changed, they're still magnificent.
