Rylan relaxes from 'long day' after being tipped to replace Phillip Schofield on This Morning

Rylan Clark has said he has had a "long day" after being linked with the role vacated by Phillip Schofield on This Morning.

The former X Factor contestant took to social media with a selfie while relaxing at home after he announcing himself that he is having a hiatus from his BBC Radio 2 show - just hours before Phil's departure from This Morning was confirmed.

Rylan, 34, is one of the bookies' favourites to replace the veteran broadcaster after he stepped away as host of the popular ITV daytime show on Saturday afternoon.

He was chilling in a blue t-shirt and grey Adidas joggers as he posted the mirror selfie on his Instagram Stories with the caption: "long day".

Rylan was clearly getting responses over what looked like a crystal dumbbell in the photo, but it was actually the reflection from the mirror of the wardrobe handle.

He added a close up selfie, added: "Not a crystal dumbbell. It's a wardrobe knob."

Saturday's shock announcement by ITV came after Phillip, 61, and Holly Willoughby, 42, had been at the centre of a fallout after reportedly drifting apart over a period of three years.

Last week, he issued a statement on the state of their friendship – without informing his former best friend of his decision prior to it being published.

However, the pair will not be on the This Morning sofa anymore after Phil confirmed his departure after 21 years as host.

He said in a statement: "I have always been proud to cover fascinating stories on This Morning. But recently, This Morning itself has become the story.

"Throughout my career in TV – including the very difficult last few days – I have always done my best to be honourable and kind.

"I understand that ITV has decided the current situation can’t go on, and I want to do what I can to protect the show that I love.

"So I have agreed to step down from This Morning with immediate effect, in the hope that the show can move forward to a bright future.

"I'd like to thank everyone who has supported me – especially This Morning's amazing viewers – and I'll see you all for the Soap Awards next month."

Holly also paid a sweet tribute to her former co-host and best friend.

She wrote: "It's been over 13 great years presenting This Morning with Phil and I want to take this opportunity to thank him for all of his knowledge, his experience and his humour.

"The sofa won’t feel the same without him."
