Rylan Clark has revealed he's found himself bruised in unusual places after asking fans to 'send help'. The BBC Radio 2 host has been sharing snippets into his journey as he joins Emma Willis and Oti Mabuse on an epic Scottish mountain trek for Comic Relief.
It was announced last week that Rylan, TV presenter Emma and Dancing on Ice judge Oti will take on the unforgiving, subarctic terrain of the Cairngorm Mountains in the Scottish Highlands. The trio started to tackle the brutal landscape on Wednesday morning (February 8) with the challenge taking place across three punishing days and two freezing nights, all captured for a special documentary which will air on BBC One in the run up to Red Nose Day on March 17.
Ahead of starting the trek, Rylan shared a fearful-looking selfie on Twitter. The 34-year-old looked less pristine than he usually does on TV as he donned the white dressing gown with his dark locks still messy from a night in bed. He then offered a few updates on his Instagram Story as he, Emma, and Oti got walking.
But taking to Instagram on Wednesday night, Rylan shared a wide-eyed selfie as he pleaded: "Send help and burgers," to his fans after having to set up camp in windy conditions. Offering an update to the PA News agency on Thursday (February 9), saying: "My body is shot. I’ve managed to somehow bruise my face (and) my collarbones from the rucksack so today carrying that (will) be quite difficult."
He added: "I’ve not actually slept, which is quite gutting because my… sleeping bag didn’t fit me. It’s been a bit of a nightmare so far." Rylan revealed that the 40lb (18kg) backpack, which contains his tent and other supplies, was “constantly putting pressure” on him when they walked for seven-and-a-half hours on Wednesday.
Asked if he thinks he can make it on the second day, Rylan said: "I’ve not really got a choice… in an ideal world, I would just get on a plane and go home, but then I’ve not done the challenge so I need to just keep going. Luckily, the girls have slept, so I’m sure they’re going to be dragging me through today."
The Voice host Emma also said that sharing the tent with Rylan and Oti featured a lot of “rolling” from all three which did not help her sleep. She added that they were "too scared" to leave from 7.30pm until 6.30am in the morning due to outside temperatures being around minus 2C.
The 46-year-old said: "I feel like I’ve been awake every hour because every time you turn over you wake up so it’s kind of delirious asleep. I think I’ve slept but actually I feel like I’ve been awake all night." She added: “So we’ve kind of had a really good downtime from (the backpacks) but I think the minute we put them on this morning, it’s going to be pretty savage again.”
Oti, 32, said her toes are cramping from the cold, her back is "aching" from her backpack, and she has been running around the camp to keep warm. The former Strictly Come Dancing professional added: "When we got to camp, I fell to my knees and I felt like crying at the end of the day one; day two is even more walking."
