Rylan Clark jokes he's become the 'face of football' after Real Madrid 'tribute'

Rylan Clark has found himself in an amusing situation in which people have joked he received a huge tribute by Spanish giants Real Madrid.

As Los Blancos faced Manchester City in the Champions League semi-final, a huge banner was unveiled in the stands.

While it was supposed to be a nod to star striker Karim Benzema, Twitter erupted in laughter at a comment likening the image to the former X Factor man.

FootballJoe shared a shot of the display and wrote: "Lovely tribute to Rylan Clark from the Real Madrid fans."

Fans were quick respond in jest, while Rylan himself also got involved and thanked them for the comment in Spanish.

As the post went viral, the 33-year-old questioned: "How did I become the face of football internationally?"

BBC's Match Of The Day also got involved, retweeting him and calling him: "Kilmarnock and Real Madrid football legend @Rylan."

The funny interaction followed Scottish fans at Kilmarnock taking a cardboard cutout of the star to their game earlier in the week to honour the league's sponsor in a hilarious way.

As well as songs going round about the Supermarket Sweep presenter, there was also footage of the cutout making it into the stands of a game - much to the delight of Rylan.

He went on to share a screenshot from a decade ago which showed him taking part in a shootout on Sky's Soccer AM alongside his fellow X Factor contestants.

Rylan captioned the post: "From humble beginnings on @SoccerAM in 2012 wearing UGG boots to international face of the game. It’s been a good 10 years #lad #cinchedit"

He also shared Sky Sports Retro's clip of him failing miserably at the crossbar challenge, which one fan labelled "iconic".

Another joked his skills should see League One promotion hopefuls Sunderland sign him.

As the banter continued to flow, there were calls for the star to be included in the next Soccer Aid squad.

However, that seemed to be where Rylan had to draw the line as he replied: "STOP THIS LUNACY," alongside three crying with laughter emojis.

Some fans weren't phased by his comment though and continued the push for the West Ham fan's inclusion.

One user wrote: "@Rylan you should play @socceraid this year! Home game at The London Stadium #COYI."

Another agreed, joking: "Imagine him strolling onto the pitch in Uggs just to smash in a 40 yard screamer."

Elsewhere, some Celtic fans are pleading with Scottish FA officials to allow the star to present the league trophy to the club if they seal another title win.

One user commented: "Hopefully you will be up at Celtic Park to present the trophy! #cinchPrem," while another penned: "Rylan has to be at Celtic Park to present the trophy, no one else is acceptable @CelticFC Cinch it."
