Rylan Clark in Twitter row with Edwina Currie over Boris Johnson

TV and radio star Rylan Clark was caught up in an unexpected Twitter row with former Conservative MP Edwina Currie after being told to 'get real.' Rylan, who hosts the Strictly Come Dancing spin-off show Strictly: It Takes Two, took to social media to comment on revelations about Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

He wrote: "He’s officially broke the law . That’s it ain’t it?'. But his comment caught the attention of former I'm a Celebrity....Get Me Out of Here! contestant Edwina, who famously resigned from her role as junior health minister in 1988 over the salmonella-in-eggs controversy.

The 75-year-old, who appeared on I'm a Celeb in 2014, disagreed and told him: "No, it isn’t. Shouldn’t have happened, but it’s done now. In case you hadn’t noticed, this all happened two years ago. Putin is laughing at us. Get real."

Radio 2 presenter Rylan, 33, remarked: "I did not have @Edwina_Currie on my bingo card for this morning." And he clapped back: "Edwina, there’s a war, we’re living with Covid, there’s a lot going on publicly and personally. I’m aware when it was. Believe me I don’t need to 'get real' it’s a statement. Not an opinion. You stay well, as will I."

Posting on his Instagram story Rylan, who has been giving fans updates on a squirrel visiting his garden after he bought a miniature picnic bench for his furry friends, added: "Twitter beef with Edwina Currie at 7am. Not today babe. Got a squirrel to feed."

Both the Prime Minister and Chancellor of the Exchequer Rishi Sunak were issued with fines as part of the Met Police probe into allegations of lockdown parties held at Downing Street, leading to calls for them both to resign. Mr Johnson has said it "didn’t occur" to him that the gathering in the Cabinet Room to mark his 56th birthday was a violation of coronavirus rules.

However, he said that after being issued with a fine following a police investigation into alleged parties at the heart of the government during the pandemic, he “now humbly accepts” he did breach Covid-19 laws. The Prime Minister, speaking to broadcasters at Chequers, said he “fully respects” the outcome of the police investigation and accepts "in all sincerity that people had the right to expect better" from him.

Carrie Johnson’s spokeswoman has also confirmed that she has paid a fine relating to her husband’s birthday celebration. Mr Johnson has become the first serving Prime Minister in history to be penalised for law-breaking in office. Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer said both Mr Johnson and Mr Sunak should both quit over the scandal.

Previously Mr Johnson admitted to attending a garden party in Downing Street, which he said he believed was a work event, and also a surprise birthday party in the Cabinet Office following a meeting, which he says he spent less than 10 minutes at.

However No 10 denied that he had any knowledge of a number of other alleged events, including one held the night before Prince Philip's funeral, which he apologised to Buckingham Palace for. MPs from both sides of the House have insisted Mr Johnson must step down now that he has been issued a fine.
