Ryanair travel rules you need to know in 2023 - from face masks to little known fee

January sales are in full swing across multiple airlines, so plenty of people will be jumping at the chance to bag a deal for a trip to the sun or slopes over the coming weeks.

Despite some concern about the return of Covid - as China deals with another surge in cases - no changes are expected to travel rules any time soon.

While most Covid-related rules have been dropped, airlines such as Ryanair still have a list of things passengers still need to bear in mind before heading to the airport.

So, if you’re heading for a break away in the next few weeks or months, here is a list of Ryanair travel rules for passengers flying out of Ireland with everything you need to know, from face masks to the lesser-known fee you face for not checking in online.

Face masks

There are no requirements from Ryanair officials that suggest a face mask is required on board - this was one of many Covid rules dropped in 2022.

The only exception is on flights to/from destinations where EU governments still require mandatory mask-wearing on public transport.

Ryanair recommends that passengers check the latest Covid-19 restrictions and requirements of their destination/arrival countries ahead of travel in case of any changes.

Hand and cabin luggage

All Ryanair fares include one small personal bag, which can be brought on board - which includes a laptop bag or a regular handbag.

However, in order to be allowed on board with it, it must fit underneath a passenger's seat, which allows for a maximum of 40cm x 20cm x 25cm.

Oversized cabin baggage will be refused at the boarding gate and will be placed in the hold of the aircraft for a fee of €69.99 (fee subject to VAT on domestic flights at applicable government rates).

The Priority and 2 Cabin Bags policy allows each passenger to board the plane ahead of time for convenience. Passengers can bring their small personal bag as well as a 10kg suitcase - which must be stored in the overhead locker.

Meanwhile, passengers travelling with more luggage must avail of a luggage check-in. Bags must be dropped at the airport check-in desk before security and will be placed in the aircraft hold.

Passengers can either book a 10 kg or a 20 kg bag to be dropped off at security ahead of their scheduled flight. Passengers can purchase up to 3 checked bags of 20kg on their booking.

Infant baggage

Parents travelling with their little ones can carry 2 items of baby equipment free of charge.

While there is no cabin bag allowance for infants, parents are permitted to carry a baby bag of up to 5kg on their knee while travelling.

Check-in rules

You should check in online at least 2 hours before your flight departs.

Those who do not check in less than two hours before their flight departs will be slapped with an airport check-in fee, which is €55 per person, or €30 for flights to and from Spain.
