RyanAir passenger delayed for 17 hours complains over £9 in vouchers as trip cut short

A couple who were due to spent a weekend in Dublin ended up with just seven hours on the Emerald Isle after Ryanair delayed their trip by 17 hours.

And to make things worse she claims they have been given just £9 in vouchers so far as compensation for the long delay.

Jemma Wood, husband Reece and their friend Christian Newton were due to fly out from Newcastle on the early 6.05am flight, but as they got to the airport they were notified by text that their new departure time would be 11am.

Children's worker Jemma from Houghton-le-Spring, Tyne and Wear said the delays kept coming and they finally boarded a flight just after midnight on Sunday.

The 31 year old said that the trio checked into to their £300 hotel for just a few hours sleep before heading back to the airport to fly home.

She took to social media and wrote: "17 hour delay for a 40 minute flight. Not even sure what happened to our original flight as [it] just disappeared.

"Any idea how we claim compensation?

"Left us in Newcastle airport from the 6:05am original flight and then transferred to new flight at 11:15pm. £9 in compensation, spent 18 hours in the airport."

Jemma told the Mail: "All facilities to get food closed apart from a bar and WHSmith - you can't even buy a meal deal for £3 - lucky to get a bottle of water.

'We ended up landing in Dublin at 12:30 on Sunday morning and had paid £300 to sleep at a hotel for a few hours before having to return to the airport to fly back again.

'We had seven hours in Dublin when we should have had a full day and night.'

'We were all just so exhausted but managed to try and stay positive and squeeze what we could - we spent a lot of money waiting in the airport.

'But, when you have taken time off work, paid to put the dog into kennels and made arrangements for the children for a rare weekend away and it's ruined, it's heartbreaking."

A Ryanair spokesman said: "This flight from Newcastle to Dublin was delayed due to a minor technical issue with the aircraft.

"This passenger attempted to submit an EU261 claim that same day, but as the delay happened within the last 24 hours, the claim was unable to be submitted.

"A member of our Customer Service Team has now contacted the passenger to assist with their claim."

They added: "Affected passengers were notified and advised of their options, in which this passenger chose to change their flight to another departing later that night.

"Passengers who chose to take the later flight were issued with multiple sets of refreshment vouchers while they waited."
