As many people prepare to fly out to popular Spanish destinations for the summer, they will want to make sure they are up-to-date with all the new rules and travel guidelines including what they are allowed to bring with them. One thing a lot of Brits travelling abroad like to take with them is booze from the duty-free at the airport, but last week reports suggested that Ryanair, which flies out of Bristol Airport, would be introducing a new rule around alcohol on flights.
It was reported that the no-frills airline had implemented a new ban on certain duty-free items for anyone flying from the UK to Ibiza, Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga, Palma and Tenerife South. The reported ban suggested that while customers would be able to buy alcohol from duty-free, they wouldn’t actually be able to carry it onto the plane.
It also suggested that if passengers did buy alcohol from duty-free then it would need to be ‘suitably’ packaged in a cabin bag which would get tagged at the gate and taken to be put in the hold.

The email left some passengers confused about what exactly the rules were when it came to purchasing duty-free alcohol and taking it onboard. Following the confusion Ryanair has now clarified its rules around taking alcohol onboard.
A spokesperson for the airline said: “We are not ‘banning’ or ‘confiscating’ duty-free alcohol at boarding gates. As per Ryanair’s T&Cs, passengers can carry duty-free alcohol onboard but must not consume it during the flight.”
So while customers will not be required to put any alcohol bought at the airport into the hold, they will not be able to open the bottles on board. For those wanting to drink on the plane, there are plenty of drink options available, both hot, cold, alcoholic and non-alcoholic.
