Ryanair confirms new alcohol rules for passengers drinking booze aboard flights

Ryanair has confirmed its alcohol rules aboard planes after rumours that booze would be subject to a blanket ban on all flights.

The budget airline confirmed it would not be banning alcoholic drinks, but passengers are not allowed to open any alcohol purchased in duty-free while in the air.

It comes after reports that Ryanair had sent an email to customers flying from the UK to Ibiza, Alicante, Barcelona, Malaga, Palma and Tenerife South announcing a ban on all duty-free booze on planes.

The reported ban suggested that while customers would be able to buy alcohol from duty-free, they wouldn’t be able to carry it onto the plane. It also suggested that if passengers did buy alcohol from duty-free then it would need to be ‘suitably’ packaged in a cabin bag which would get tagged at the gate and taken to be put in the hold.

The email left passengers confused about the rules which Ryanair has now clarified. The budget airline has stated that it is not banning booze, but passengers will not be able to open any alcohol purchased in duty-free on board the plane, reports The Liverpool Echo.

A spokesperson for the airline said: “We are not ‘banning’ or ‘confiscating’ duty-free alcohol at boarding gates.

"As per Ryanair’s T&Cs, passengers can carry duty-free alcohol onboard but must not consume it during the flight."

The Ryanair website also states: "You must not take hot drinks on the plane, or drink your own alcohol when on the plane."

Customers will not be required to put any alcohol bought at the airport into the hold, however they will not be able to open the bottles on board. For those wanting to drink on the plane, there are plenty of drink options available, both hot, cold, alcoholic and non-alcoholic.
