Ryan Tubridy taking break from RTE radio show to work on 'bits and pieces'

Ryan Tubridy has revealed he is taking a short break from his RTE radio show to work on other "bits and pieces".

The radio broadcaster, 49, is at the helm of the 9am-10am slot on RTE Radio 1 each Monday to Friday.

But today Tubridy confirmed to his listeners that he is taking the next couple of days off and won't be back on the airwaves until Monday week, April 10.

Speaking at the end of his show on Tuesday, he said: "I've got lots of TV things and bits and pieces to be doing in the next few days so I won't be here, and next week I'll be on a bit of a mid-term break, but I'll be back in for TV again.

"So the lads will look after you between now and then. In the meantime, thanks to everyone for putting it all together. I'll see you Monday week.

"My last ever [Late Late Show] country special is on this Friday which I am excited about, to see everybody. It's all go.

"Mind yourselves and see you on the other side."

Ryan didn't mention who would be filling in for him during his break, but he is usually replaced by Oliver Callan, Brendan Courtney or Baz Ashmawy.

The RTE star is taking the brief break from radio as speculation continues over who will replace him as host of The Late Late Show.

Ryan shocked the nation when he revealed he would be stepping away from the long-running chat show this May, days before his milestone 50th birthday.

Miriam O'Callaghan, who was hotly-tipped to get the gig back in 2009 when Pat Kenny quit the role, released a statement confirming she won't be putting herself forward for the job.

Claire Byrne, Sarah McInerney, Daithi O'Se and Tommy Tiernan have also been linked with the high-profile job but RTE are keeping tight-lipped on Tubs' replacement for now.

Although he is leaving the Late Late, Ryan has confirmed he is not leaving RTE as he will continue to present his daily radio show and is keen to pursue other projects.

He said in a statement earlier this month: "I will continue on the radio show which I love and will talk about other projects in the future that will embrace my love of books, history and Ireland but that's for another day.

"For now, we have exciting plans for the remaining [Late Late] shows this season. Stay tuned!"
