Early life
Ryan Tubridy was born in Booterstown, Dublin, in 1973 to his parents Patrick (a medical practitioner who passed away in January 2013) and wife Catherine (née Andrews). Ryan has four siblings Judith, Niall, Rachel and Garrett.
Ryan went to primary school at Carysfort National School and secondary school Blackrock College. He studied for his Bachelor of Arts in history and Greek and Roman civilisation at University College Dublin, where he was a member of the Fianna Fáil Kevin Barry Cumann and was active in the Students' Union and Belfield FM as well as the Dun Laoghaire branch of Ógra Fianna Fáil.
Career beginnings and success on The Late Late Show
After leaving college, Tubridy became a runner in RTE, initially working on The Gerry Ryan Show making cups of tea and coffee. He would go on to work as a reporter for Today with Pat Kenny, and by the summer of 1999 he started presenting Morning Glory on RTE Radio 1.
In July 2000, he moved to The Sunday Show and from 2002 to 2005 Tubridy presented The Full Irish, RTE 2FM's morning breakfast show. The following year in 2006, he got his own show The Ryan Tubridy Show on RTE Radio 1.
After Pat Kenny announced he was quitting The Late Late Show in 2009, Turidy was the leading favourite to take over the show.
On 11 May that year, RTE officially announced Ryan Tubridy as Kenny's successor, and over the last 14 years he's given us some truly magical moments on both The Late Late Show and The Late Late Toy Show.
Marriage and two daughters
Ryan met his ex-wife Anne Marie Power in RTE 2FM in 1997, when she was going into a recording studio that he was leaving. The pair would go on to have their first daughter Ella, before getting married in 2003.
The couple had their second daughter Julia before separating in 2006. Tubridy maintains a very close relationship with his daughters, 23-year-old Ella and 17-year-old Julia, and has previously said that his family helps him to unwind from his busy work life.
Tubridy previously told RTE Guide: "We have a very beautiful relationship and friendship, so I am very lucky. They are young women now so we can have a few drinks together, we can have nights out, nights in.
“They’re at that lovely age when they are showing me up for the fool that I can be, and calling me out on the mistakes that I make."
Favourite ever guests on The Late Late Show
Over the years, Tubs has met literally everyone during his tenure on The Late Late Show; politicians, activists, TV stars, movie stars, influencers, and more. But the Dublin native has openly shared some of his favourite guests that he has welcomed onto The Late Late Show, which includes Canadian singer Michael Buble, Irish actor Michael Fassbender, Steprothers star John C Reilly, comedian Peter Kay, cancer campaigner Vicky Phelan, and Adam King from The Late Late Toy Show.
Tubridy previously told VIP Magazine: “It’s very hard to pick, you know, a favourite guest, but there are people who come through the door and you say, ‘oh, this should be fun’. Like Michael Bublé, for example, is always, you know, a pleasure to see because he loves it.”
“Peter Kay is another very funny guy that, seems to enjoy being on the show and being part of it. I’ve always been a fan of Michael Fassbender. He’s good crack. John C. Reilly, another.”
