Toronto Maple Leafs forward Ryan Reaves has been suspended for five games without pay by the NHL's Department of Safety following an illegal check to the head of Edmonton Oilers defenseman Darnell Nurse. In addition to the suspension, Reaves has been fined $35,156.25.
The incident occurred during the second period of the game between the Toronto Maple Leafs and the Edmonton Oilers, which ended in a 4-3 overtime victory for Toronto. At 2:38 of the second period, Reaves delivered a high hit to Nurse while the defenseman had possession of the puck along the end boards in his own zone.
The forceful hit caused Nurse's helmet to nearly come off, and he was left with visible blood on his face. Following the impact, Nurse appeared disoriented and required immediate medical attention before being forced to leave the game.
As a result of the hit, Reaves was issued a match penalty by the officials on the ice, signaling the severity of the infraction. The NHL's Department of Safety conducted a review of the incident and determined that Reaves' actions warranted a significant suspension and fine.
This suspension serves as a reminder of the NHL's commitment to player safety and the enforcement of rules aimed at preventing dangerous plays on the ice. Reaves will be ineligible to participate in the Maple Leafs' upcoming games as he serves his five-game suspension.
