Hibs have offered Ryan Porteous a new contract.
The Easter Road defender has entered the final year of his deal and as things stand, will be able to speak to other clubs from January. The Scotland call-up has established himself as the main man in the capital club’s defence and has been linked with the likes of Galatasaray in the last 12 months, as well as moves to Belgium.
Millwall had a January deadline day bid of £1million for Porteous knocked back in 2021. Then-Blues boss Gary Rowett admitted he saw Porteous as one for the future, but the Hibees were unwilling to let the centre back go. Now boss Lee Johnson has confirmed an offer to extend his stay in Leith is on the table, but hasn’t yet been signed. Should Porteous opt against remaining in green and white, then Johnson, chief executive Ben Kensell and head of recruitment Ian Gordon have a decision to make.
The current window would represent the club’s best opportunity to cash in on Porteous. Should he reject the new deal and sit tight until January, then Hibs would receive a nominal fee at best. The player could then start talking to other interested parties and leave for free at the end of the 2022/23 Premiership campaign.
But Johnson remains hopeful that boyhood Hibee Porteous will put pen to paper. He told Sky Sports: "Every squad has moving parts to it and Ryan is a great player. We'd love to keep him but at the same time it's his prerogative in terms of that contract offer. At the moment he hasn't signed it, but we're forever hopeful."
