Brutally honest Ryan Porteous reckons there were people who wanted Scotland to fail against Ukraine as soon as they spotted his name on the team sheet.
The Hibs defender earned his first senior international cap in the crucial Nations League fixture in Krakow, and played a vital role in securing the goalless draw that saw Steve Clarke 's side top group B1 and guarantee a Euro 2024 play off and moves the country up to second seeds. The 23-year-old's heroic display was topped off by an inch-perfect tackle on Oleksandr Zubkov as the Ukraine sub let fly in the final moments of the draw, to help secure the all-important clean sheet.
Despite the display, Porteous reckons some Scottish football fans were hoping to see the team lose when Clarke picked him to start at the back for the national side. However, he didn't let the outside noise put a dampener on a massive milestone in his career.
Speaking to The Nine, Porteous said: "There might have been a lot of people that were wanting me to fail, or wanting the team to fail because I was playing and things like that. But I'm big enough to deal with that.
"I'm just glad that I got the opportunity. I waited a long time for the opportunity, but I'm just glad that when I did get it i've taken it. More importantly, Scotland moves in the direction we want them to go."
