Ryan Peniston’s remarkable Queen’s run continues as world No180 reaches quarter-finals

Ryan Peniston’s incredible run at Queen’s continues after victory over Francisco Cerundolo.

A three-set win for the Brit on Thursday earned his spot in the quarter-finals of the Cinch Championship as his remarkable story shows little sign of ending.

The 26-year-old had stunned world No5 Casper Ruud on Tuesday, having also found out on the same day he had received a wild card in the main draw at Wimbledon, and made the most of this latest appearance on Centre Court at Queen’s Club with a 6-0 4-6 6-4 win in two hours.

Peniston dished out a first-set bagel in 20 minutes over his Argentinian opponent, but Cerundolo fought back to show his class and looked favourite to win the second-round tie when he broke at the start of the decider.

World No180 Peniston had other ideas and won the last three games, clinching another great victory with a winner down the line to continue British involvement in the west London tournament.

Earlier in the day’s play, defending champion Matteo Berrettini came through a second-set tiebreak to win his battle with Denis Kudla while Tommy Paul knocked out Stanislav Wawrinka in two sets.

Tomorrow, Katie Boulter faces Simona Halep in the quarter-finals of the Birmingham Classic.
