Ryan Kent earns Rangers defence over Liam Scales clash as Michael Beale insists 'he's not a tough kid'

Michael Beale has backed Ryan Kent over claims that he should have been retrospectively banned following a clash with Aberdeen’s Liam Scales in the Viaplay Cup semi final.

No action was taken by ref Willie Collum or VAR following the incident and the Rangers manager is adamant there was no need for officials to get involved. "Ryan is trying to run,” he said. “Scales is stopping him run and has wrapped him up. He (Kent) has tried to get himself free. Come on. Ryan is not a tough kid, that is not Ryan. Ryan is a technical player. A lot has been made about it but only from one section of support.”

Meanwhile, Scott Wright is hoping that his positive impact from the bench - creating the winning goal for Kemar Roofe on Sunday - can earn him a starting slot against Kilmarnock tomorrow. The Rangers attacker said: “I tried to bring my qualities to the game. Obviously, the manager thought so by putting me on that point in the game, hoping they would tire on that pitch.

“I tried to be direct and create chances for the team and it came off. It’s always something I try to do - catch his eye when I get opportunities on the pitch or even in training. I have to be ready when called upon, whether that’s tomorrow or down the line.

“There is a fluidity about the team that’s good to be a part of. He wants you to be constantly moving around the pitch. I think you can see that in the performances we’ve had.

“It’s a different style of play since he’s come in. We were used to it before when he was here with Steven Gerrard and it worked really well for us. There is a lot of familiarity for the players because we know how to play with that style.

“The whole time he’s been in, he’s told us to be patient and stick to what we believe in. We are going to get chances, it’s just a case of whether we can take them.

“You see the belief right through the team. We don’t panic and we keep playing the way we want to play and create chances.”
