Ryan Giggs comments on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at Man Utd still ring true a year on

Ryan Giggs’s comments on Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer exactly a year ago are still very relevant today.

The Red Devils are struggling in the Premier League, and sit way down in 14th place going into the international break.

Despite securing third in the Premier League last season, little progress seems to have been made on this United side.

A poor start to this campaign has once again heaped pressure on Solskjaer's shoulders. Disappointing displays against Arsenal and Istanbul Basaksehir highlighted United's defensive frailties and lack of leadership.

And with Pogba currently struggling to make the starting XI the World Cup winner still remains an expensive issue for Solskajer.

The United boss alleviated some of the pressure on his shoulders by picking up a 3-1 win at high fliers Everton before the two-week international break.

But that hasn't stopped talk of the Old Trafford board lining up a potential replacement in Mauricio Pochettino.

Just over 12 months ago, in October 2019, United legend and Wales boss Ryan Giggs called for Solskjaer to be given more time when the club were in a similar situation.

Giggs insisted that the likes of Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola were allowed to find their feet at Liverpool and Manchester City, and asked that Solskjaer be treated the same.

A year on and it appears those comments are still relevant today. Solskjaer was handed the role on a permanent basis in March, 2019. After just over a year and a half he still has some way to match the three years it took Klopp to win his first trophy at Liverpool.

He still needs time.

"It's a tough job at the moment," Giggs. "What Manchester United have had in the last four to five years is a mix of Sir Alex Ferguson, David Moyes, Louis van Gaal and Jose Mourinho players.

"Ole is trying to get back to what Manchester United used to be, picking young hungry players - like Dan James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Harry Maguire.

"But he's unfortunate in a way to be in the same era as Jurgen Klopp and Pep Guardiola.

"Klopp is in his fourth year at Liverpool. Pep established Man City during that time. Maurcio Pochettino has had six years with Spurs.

"Ole has to be given time too. You need that time to mould your team into the way you want them to play, although whether managers always get that time in this day and age is another thing."

United are back in action on November 21 when they host West Brom (3pm kick off).
