Ryan Gauld in smirking Canada confession amid ongoing Scotland snub as he points to Arfield and Wotherspoon path

Forgotten Ryan Gauld has admitted he would consider a Canada call up after failing to make the breakthrough for Scotland.

The former Dundee United and Sporting playmaker has enjoyed a successful career away from the Scottish Premiership in Portugal and America, and was named Player of the Year for Vancouver Whitecaps last term after an outstanding season in the MLS. The 27-year-old has continued his form into the new campaign, but has still yet to receive a look-in from Scotland with boss Steve Clarke for the Euro qualifiers.

Clarke has a host of midfield options to pick from as he pushes to reach for Euro 2024 with John McGinn the mainstay in Gauld's midfield role. Despite winning 11 caps for Scotland Under-21s, Gauld has not even been called up for a squad since 2014 when Gordon Strachan was in charge of the national side and is yet to receive a senior cap.

Canada are preparing to host the World Cup in 2026, meaning they will automatically qualify for the tournament. If Gauld remains with the Whitecaps until the end of 2025 he will become eligible to play for the Canadian national side - and could take his place at a major tournament.

Speaking to One Soccer, Gauld left the door open to the prospect of a switching allegiances like St Johnston star David Wotherspoon and Rangers midfielder Scott Arfield. He said. “I think that’s a conversation to be had when the time comes, but I don’t see why not if the opportunity did arise.

"Guys like Wotherspoon and Arfield grasped that chance, and I’m sure they’re delighted with the decision that they made. I think it’s still a couple of years away, though, so there’s not too much point looking too far forward, just yet.”
