Ryan Garcia Suspended For Positive Drug Test In NY

Ryan Garcia has been suspended for a year by the New York State Athletic Commission following a positive test for performance-enhancing drugs after his April 20 victory over Devin Haney. The commission ruled the fight as a no-contest and mandated Garcia to forfeit his $1 million earnings from the bout, along with a $10,000 fine.

As per the ruling, Garcia will be eligible to compete in New York state again after April 20, 2025, provided he passes a drug test. The commission emphasized its commitment to upholding professional standards and safeguarding the integrity of sports under its jurisdiction.

While the suspension specifically pertains to fights in New York state, it is common practice for athletic commissions to honor rulings across different jurisdictions.

Prior to news of the suspension, Garcia had hinted at retirement from boxing on social media and expressed interest in potentially joining the UFC. He maintained his innocence, claiming to have been unjustly treated despite testing positive for PEDs.

Garcia's legal team contended that he was a victim of substance contamination and highlighted his clean drug test history, even outside of training periods. They asserted that Garcia had not knowingly consumed any banned substances.

The positive test results revealed the presence of Ostarine, a prohibited substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency, in Garcia's A-sample taken before and on the day of the Haney fight. Ostarine, classified as a selective androgen receptor modulator, can promote muscle growth.

In the bout against Haney, Garcia emerged victorious by majority decision, knocking down the WBC super lightweight champion three times. However, Garcia was unable to claim the title due to exceeding the weight limit.

Following the commission's decision, Haney expressed gratitude for receiving justice and acknowledged the lack of a level playing field during their fight. He viewed the experience as a part of his journey and an opportunity for personal growth, looking forward to spending time with loved ones and contemplating future endeavors.
