Ryan Flynn believes St Mirren’s new system is so strong they will win games this season even when they’re playing badly.
The experienced midfielder was a supersub against Livingston, picking out Keanu Baccus with a pinpoint cross to set up the Buddies’ opener in a dramatic late 2-1 victory.
While admitting they were far from their best last weekend, Flynn believes the counter-attacking structure implemented by Stephen Robinson after their dismal Premier Sports Cup run is the key factor behind the impressive streak that’s seen them bag five wins in their last six Premiership games.
And the 34-year-old fully believes the Saints could be in for a “special season” thanks to the manager’s clearcut vision for the Paisley club.
Speaking exclusively to Renfrewshire Live Sport, Flynn said: “It wasn’t pretty against Livi, but it was a brilliant result.
“The discipline and organisation we have now allows us to still be in that game, without playing our best. The manager’s recruitment has been spot on and everyone fits into the system. Players can drop out, but the system remains the same.
“I worked with Robinson at Oldham and he is a very, very good coach. The main thing he’s brought to St Mirren is how well drilled we are.
“Even when we’re not playing well, we’re so well organised and hard to break down. The triggers are all set and it makes the game easier for us because there’s no grey areas at all.
“The whole group has bought into it and we’ve had an excellent start to the season. The challenge we’ve set ourselves now is to keep this going until the World Cup break and then see where we can go from there.
“With the squad and system we’ve got in place this could be a special season for us.”
Flynn has had to bide his time and wait for opportunities for minutes this season – making his third league appearance from the bench against the Lions when Ryan Strain was forced off injured.
The former Sheffield United man believes every player in the Saints squad is buying into the collective ethos which has helped them soar to third in the Premiership table.
Flynn said: “I’ve had to wait for my chance, but I’m always ready to give my best for this club.
“I’m glad I got the nod and I just need to make sure I’m fit and ready.
“The brilliant thing about our squad now is there are genuinely no egos. Our club captain Joe Shaughnessy, who has been a standout performer over the last few seasons, has had to wait for his chance but he hasn’t sulked one bit.
“He’s a proper professional and he helps create the winner for us against Livingston with the first effort. Marcus Fraser has had time out of the team and now he’s one of our best performers on the pitch.
“The strength in depth and quality we have on the bench now is a breath of fresh air. It bodes very well for us going forward.”
