More than 7,000 people have lost their lives this year in the ongoing conflict in mineral-rich eastern Congo, where Rwanda-backed M23 rebels have made significant territorial gains. The situation was described as alarming by Congo's prime minister, who highlighted the escalating security and humanitarian crisis in the region.
The rebels have recently seized key cities like Goma and Bukavu, intensifying the conflict that involves various armed groups competing for control over the valuable mineral resources in the area. The European Union has taken a stand against Rwanda's involvement, emphasizing the importance of Congo's territorial integrity and suspending defense consultations with Rwanda.
An agreement between the EU and Rwanda on critical raw materials is under review, with the EU expressing concerns about the exploitation of resources in Congo by Rwanda. The United States has also called for a halt to mineral sourcing from areas controlled by M23, further isolating Rwanda economically.

The United Nations has warned of the broader regional implications of the conflict, which has displaced millions of people over the years. The M23 rebels have ambitions to overthrow the government in Kinshasa and have received support from Rwandan troops in their quest for territorial expansion.
M23 leaders claim to be fighting for the rights of ethnic Tutsis and Congolese of Rwandan origin, citing concerns of discrimination and insecurity. However, analysts view these claims as a pretext for Rwanda's involvement in the conflict, which has led to reports of human rights abuses and civilian casualties.
The situation remains volatile, with reports of violence in cities like Uriva and allegations of extrajudicial killings by the rebels. The international community is closely monitoring the developments in eastern Congo, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the conflict that has ravaged the region for decades.
