Rutherglen schoolkids scoop enterprise award with clever app

A group of pupils at a Lanarkshire school have reason to be app-y after their clever idea won a prestigious award.

The tech team from Trinity High in Rutherglen lifted the award for the Overall Business Idea of the Year as part of the Circular Economy Challenge of Young Enterprise Scotland.

The Circular Economy Challenge is a national enterprise initiative, introducing students to the idea of a circular economy and the impact of our society on the planet.

The schoolkids were asked to design a circular product or service, where everything has value and nothing is wasted, before being given the opportunity to present their ideas to a judging panel of experts.

The Trinity pupils created an app called ReroUted, aimed at encouraging people to recycle.

The app directs people towards their nearest recycle machine, with many of these placed at schools and in local parks.

When people recycle, they gain points, in a style similar to a Boots Advantage Card.

For every ten points, a tree is planted. Points also equate to vouchers for people to spend in shops in their local community, meaning it helps the immediate area in multiple ways.

The Trinity pupils who took part were Daniel Clark, Gemma Corrigan, Hollie Friel, Franc Korzec, Abbie Downing, Kiera Murtagh, Eva Docherty, Katie Gaffney, Iris Ware, Sophie McClusky and Liam McDevitt, with teachers Mr McGowan, Mr Sutherland and Miss Kilgour overseeing their efforts.
