South Lanarkshire councillors have approved plans for a restaurant in Rutherglen.
At the planning committee meeting last Tuesday (September 13), elected members gave the green light to build a restaurant on the site of a previous petrol station on Stonelaw Road in Rutherglen.
Plans will include a restaurant with a takeaway access on the site of the old petrol station. All equipment associated with the petrol station was removed several years ago following the closure of the site.
The existing access from Stonelaw Road will be rearranged to provide one vehicular access in and out of the site. There are plans for seven parking spaces, including two accessible spaces and a bay for electrical charging as well as bicycle spaces.
The plans received 21 letters of objection which raised concerns over pollution, increased traffic and the fact the area already has lots of takeaway shops. The plans received 13 letters of support.
Council officers recommended that the plans be approved as the council are keen to see the derelict site redeveloped.
Councillors raised concerns surrounding refuse and traffic flow.
Councillor Norman Rae (Cambuslang West) said: “I’m aware that this particular area, in common with town centre areas, has problems with bins being left on pavements which often creates issues for residents.
"So I was just wondering whether an arrangement would be made with the council to include specific timings on how long have to be removed for the pavement once waste is collected?”
As the plans for a restaurant fall under the trade waste management category, it doesn’t fall under the council’s responsibility.
Councillor Margaret Cowie (Rutherglen South), said: “In respect of the application, whilst i’m not objecting to it, I am a bit worried about the traffic.
"It’s on a very busy road, next to a bus stop which services around four to five buses, there’s numerous restaurants across the road as well as a closeby Tesco, it is a busy street. I feel that for this restaurant to have vehicle access off Stonelaw Road will create issues.”
Council officers revealed that the application proposed to move access further back from the bus stop which will improve access from the previous petrol station.
