Rutherglen man slams council after receiving fine for parking in his own disabled bay

A man from Rutherglen has slammed South Lanarkshire Council after he received a fine for parking in his own disabled bay outside his home and the local authority rejected his appeal.

Jamie Agnew has lived on Underwood Road since 1994 and applied in March last year for a disabled parking spot to be placed outside his home due to his Achilles tendonitis and back pain.

The bay was later installed in November, but he received a fine a few days later for parking in it, reports Lanarkshire Live. The 31-year-old appealed the fine but it was rejected.

Jamie said: “I had taken my blue badge with me when I was travelling in my dad’s car to go to a hospital appointment, due to how difficult it can be getting parked there.

“I came home to a parking ticket that day when I was parked outside my own house, in my bay, on a residential street in the middle of nowhere.

“I appealed the ticket, and explained the situation to the council, yet they rejected my appeal.

“I had to pay the £30 fine because I only get disability benefits, so I couldn’t afford it if it had gone up to the £60 mark.

“Now, once a week parking wardens are patrolling the streets, despite it being the same car.

“I had trouble parking on this street before, and now this has caused another stressful situation. I am constantly worried that I will get another ticket.

“SLC has been quite dismissive, and it just seems like they are targeting a disabled person to get more money.”

Jamie's fine has since been cancelled by the local authority as a goodwill gesture.

Colin Park, the council’s Head of Roads, Transportation and Fleet, said: “Following a complaint made by Mr Agnew regarding a Penalty Charge Notice that was issued to him, we have decided given the circumstances to cancel the PCN.

“A letter will be sent to Mr Agnew to explain our findings.”
