Rust shooting: Alec Baldwin to learn if he’ll be charged in Halyna Hutchins’ death

The New Mexico District Attorney will reveal her decision on whether to press charges against Alec Baldwin or anyone else in the 2021 Rust movie shooting on Thursday.

The decision, made by Mary Carmack-Altwies and special prosecutor Andrea Reeb, will be shared via a written statement at 9am local time (4pm GMT).

It comes less than three months after the DA’s office received the final report from the Sheriff’s Office into the incident, which resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins.

Director Joel Souza was also wounded in the shooting on the Bonanza Creek Ranch set near Santa Fe, Arizona.

“Regardless of the District Attorney’s decision, the announcement will be a solemn occasion, made in a manner keeping with the office’s commitment to upholding the integrity of the judicial process and respecting the victim’s family,” said Heather Brewer, spokesperson for the DA.

Aside from the statement, there will be no news conference or public appearances by the District Attorney or the special prosecutor, Ms Brewer said.

30 Rock and Saturday Night Live actor Baldwin, who also served as a producer on “Rust,” has denied responsibility for the shooting.

He has said he was told the gun was “cold,” an industry term meaning it is safe to use, and that he did not pull the trigger. He has sued crew members for negligence.

An FBI forensic test of the single-action revolver that Baldwin was using found it “functioned normally” and would not fire without the trigger being pulled.

Hutchins’ family settled a wrongful death lawsuit against Baldwin and other producers last year. Under the agreement, filming on the low-budget movie is set to resume this month with Hutchins’ husband serving as an executive producer.
