Russian teenager calling for peace in Ukraine could face up to ten years in jail

A Russian student who called for peace in Ukraine is held in a court cage – and could face up to 10 years in jail.

Olesya Kryvtsova, 19, was arrested by police who broke in to her home with a sledgehammer.

The teen was then charged with “discrediting the army” and “justifying terrorism”.

Olesya has also been added to Moscow’s list of extremists and terrorists and is being held under house arrest until her trial.

Her mother Natalia, 46, said: “Olesya is a pacifist – she spoke out against the war in Ukraine.

“Not all of her classmates like her position and it seems that someone informed against her. After that, armed police broke into her home and arrested her.

“But my daughter is not guilty of anything. She is a good, sensitive girl who hates violence and blood.

“Her only fault is not being afraid to express her anti-war position. Sadly, those who sympathise with Olesya can only whisper about it.

“The situation in our country now is as it was under Stalin. We have no hope things will change for the better in the near future.”

Olesya shared anti-war sentiments on Instagram and VKontakte, a Russian social media platform. She had previously been fined 30,000 roubles (£360) for putting up anti-war posters in her home city of Arkhangelsk, 800 miles north of Moscow.

One picture shows her defiantly making a peace sign. In another photo, she is seen reluctantly wearing cadet uniform during military training at school.

Under the terms of her arrest, she cannot use the internet, a phone or send or receive mail.

Natalia added: “Olesya has always been independent, capable and persistent. For four years she’s been speaking against military training in schools and conscription in the army. She told me: ‘Whatever happens in the world, weapons are only used to kill.’

“Her biggest wish is for peace in Ukraine. We will not give up fighting for her. We are helped by some friends but sadly the majority support Putin and blame Olesya.”
