A Russian official who spoke out against his country's invasion of Ukraine has been detained on the US border.
Politician Viktor Kamenshchikov, 31, was a former Communist Party member who served as a deputy in parliament.
He has now been reportedly arrested for trying to cross the US-Mexico border.
However, according to reports, it is not yet known why he has been arrested but many believe it's due to him crossing the US border illegally.
It is still unknown where the Russian politician was detained and according to the newspaper Kommersant "we have no information over where he is now".
Kamenshchikov has not been publicly seen in meetings since the end of February after he was vocal about the invasion of Ukraine after disagreeing with the Kremlin's actions.
As a result, on February 27, he made an application to leave the Communist Party after the party he was in recognised the independence of the self-proclaimed Donetsk and Luhansk People's Republics.
He told Kommersant : "I do not agree with the position of the party leadership" in its support for the "military operations in Ukraine and the use of Russian troops on the territory of a neighbouring state."
He added: "I am against war in principle."
In addition, Kamenshchikov criticised politicians in his own party after claiming the politicians were forced into voting for the military invasion of Ukraine, he told sibreal.org in an interview on March 5.
He also added he believed the politicians knew about Putin's military plans in advance.
Any criticism of the military invasion can have serious consequences for Russia citizens as they be arrested and imprisoned - after the Russian parliament passed a law in April saying any anyone who spreads "fake" information about the military can be jailed up to 15 years.
Kamenshchikov was vocal about citizens being forced to stay silent as he said "most Russians don't understand that by keeping silent, they increase their own long-term losses."
He added any citizens who do not oppose the war "means that they are for it" and the country will spend a long time for dealing with all the horror that is happening for "five, 10, 20 years".
The 31-year-old said: "People in Ukraine are waking up at night from the explosion of bombs. I am really ashamed to discuss this issue."
