Russian Embassy address change to Independent Ukraine Road approved by Councillors

A pro-Ukraine change to the Russian Embassy's address has been approved by Dublin Councillors.

Zelenskyy Road - the Ukrainian President's name - and Independent Ukraine Road have both been mooted as potential new names for Orwell Road where the Embassy is located.

The Russian Embassy in Rathgar has been subjected to protests since the invasion of Ukraine a fortnight ago -including one man driving a truck through the gates.

The boundaries of Dublin City Council and Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council split the road down the middle so a motion will have to be passed by both local authorities.

Then a plebiscite will be put to locals in the Orwell Road area.

A motion to change the name to Independent Ukraine Road passed the Dundrum Area Committee of DLRCC on Monday.

Labour Councillor Peter O'Brien, who brought the motion forward, told Dublin Live it was a "show of solidarity" with the people of Ukraine that all letters to the Russian Embassy will have Independent Ukraine written on them.

He said: "There is palpable anger at what the Russians are doing to the people of Ukraine but also how the Russian ambassador has spoken about Ireland.

"Every letter that comes to that Embassy, it will have to say Free Independent Ukraine."

DCC Councillor Dermot Lacey is considering a similar motion to change the name of the road to Zelenskyy Road - after the Ukrainian President.

However, the motion would need "overwhelming support" in the South East Area Committee to be put forward.

He said: "Not that a row in an area committee of Dublin City Council would have any impact on the war but I wouldn't just do that to score some sort of point. I am continuing to have chats with my local colleagues.

"There are different opinions and I have heard that President Zelenskyy has not got the wokest views on Palestine and I think that is causing some people some problems.

He added: "It is not an issue for me but for some people it is.. I will only put it forward if there is near universal agreement."

DCC and Dun-Laoghaire Rathdown County Council both need to approve a motion on the name change before it goes to a plebiscite for locals to decide.
