Russian Defector Found Dead In Spain Suspected To Be Kuzminov

Body found in Spain may be Maksim Kuzminov, Russian defector.

Spanish police suspect that the body found in an eastern town with bullet wounds may belong to Russian defector Maksim Kuzminov, who famously escaped across front lines with Ukraine last year. Ukrainian military intelligence confirmed Kuzminov's death in Spain but did not provide further details. Russian officials labeled Kuzminov a 'traitor and criminal,' with the head of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service condemning him as a 'moral corpse.' Ukraine reportedly offered protection to Kuzminov if he remained in the country.

The body, initially identified as a 33-year-old Ukrainian, was discovered in La Cala, near Alicante, with false documents. Spanish authorities now believe it could be Kuzminov. The body showed signs of multiple gunshot wounds and being run over by a car. A burning car, potentially linked to the attack, was found nearby. The Kremlin stated it had no information on the case, and Moscow had not received any details through diplomatic channels.

Spanish police are investigating the incident, which occurred on February 13. The discovery has raised questions about the circumstances surrounding Kuzminov's death and the potential motives behind the attack. The situation remains fluid as authorities work to confirm the identity of the deceased individual and piece together the events leading to the tragic outcome.
