Two Russian cargo ships carrying oil products are facing difficulties due to bad weather in the Kerch Strait, as reported by the country's ministry of emergency situations. One of the vessels, named 'Volgoneft 212,' ran aground and sustained damage, leading to the evacuation of its 13 crew members. Tragically, one person has been confirmed dead as a result of the incident.
The second cargo ship, 'Volgoneft 239,' also encountered issues in the same region, going adrift after sustaining damage. This vessel has 14 individuals on board who are currently in need of assistance.
An emergency helicopter rescue team has been dispatched to aid the crew of 'Volgoneft 212,' while an operational headquarters comprising over 50 specialists and 11 units of equipment is actively involved in the response efforts. The ministry is currently assessing the potential impact of an oil spill resulting from these incidents.
Footage circulating on unofficial Ukrainian and Russian Telegram channels depicts the severe damage inflicted on one of the cargo ships, with the vessel appearing to be split in two. The video shows choppy waves rocking the ship as crew members, wearing life jackets, navigate the precarious situation.
While the exact location of the video remains unverified, it is important to note that there is no indication that these distressing events are linked to any conflict-related activities. Ukraine's aspirations to reclaim Crimea, which was annexed by Russia in 2014, have been a point of contention, but there is no evidence to suggest that these incidents are a result of such tensions.
