Finnish President Alexander Stubb recently expressed his views on Russia's exclusion from the upcoming Olympic Games in Paris due to the war in Ukraine. Stubb stated that he hoped this decision would help the Russian population realize the extent of their isolation.

According to the announcement, Russian and Belarusian athletes can still participate in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris as individual neutral athletes, as long as they meet the necessary eligibility criteria. However, teams consisting of athletes holding Russian or Belarusian passports are not allowed to compete. Additionally, athletes who actively support the war will not be permitted to enter or participate in the games.

Stubb shared his personal opinion on the matter, expressing that he would have preferred no Russian or Belarusian athletes to be present at the Olympics. He emphasized that the war in Ukraine constitutes a severe violation of international law and should not be condoned.

While acknowledging that the decision ultimately lies with the Olympic Committee, Stubb highlighted the potential positive outcome of the exclusion, stating that it could prompt discussions among the Russian population about the morality of their country's actions in Ukraine. He viewed this as a possible opportunity for reflection and dialogue within Russian communities.

Stubb's comments reflect the broader international sentiment regarding Russia's involvement in the conflict in Ukraine and its repercussions on the global stage. The exclusion of Russian and Belarusian teams from the Paris Olympics serves as a symbolic gesture of disapproval towards their governments' actions.
