Miriam Butorin was unable to attend Taylor Swift's concert on Friday for her 13th birthday due to a significant reason. Her mother, Alsu Kurmasheva, a Russian-American journalist, was released from Russian detention on Thursday as part of a historic prisoner swap involving 24 detainees, including other Americans.

Kurmasheva, a 47-year-old journalist for Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, had been detained in October 2023 on charges of spreading false information about the Russian army, which her family and employer denied. Her release was a result of a complex negotiation between Russia, the US, and other Western nations.
