Russia has expelled a British diplomat working at the embassy in Moscow on allegations of espionage, further straining diplomatic relations between the two countries. The Federal Security Service (FSB) of Russia claimed that the diplomat provided false information to enter the country as a cover for intelligence activities, violating Russian law.
The FSB identified signs of intelligence and subversive work by the diplomat, posing a threat to the security of the Russian Federation. As a result, the Russian Foreign Ministry revoked the diplomat's accreditation and ordered him to leave the country within two weeks.
British Ambassador Nigel Casey was summoned by the Russian Foreign Ministry in response to the incident. The UK has been at odds with Russia over its invasion of Ukraine, with the UK imposing heavy sanctions and providing military and economic support to Ukraine.
In a recent escalation, Ukraine reportedly launched British-French-made Storm Shadow missiles at Russian targets, following the firing of US-made ATACMS missiles into Russia. Russian President Vladimir Putin condemned these actions, attributing them to what he described as the 'reckless decisions' of Western countries in supporting Ukraine.
