Russia launched a missile attack on Thursday that destroyed the Trypilska Thermal Power Plant (TPP) in Ukraine's Kyiv region. The attack, which included 82 missiles and drones, resulted in the complete destruction of the largest power-generating plant in the area. Despite the devastating impact, there were no casualties reported, and power cuts in Kyiv and surrounding regions have been avoided.
Ukraine's Air Force successfully shot down 18 incoming missiles and 39 drones, but six hypersonic Kinzhal missiles evaded the country's air defenses. The energy company Centrenergo, which operated the Trypilska TPP, expressed shock at the scale of destruction, stating that the company had lost 100% of its power generation capacity across its three plants.
This attack is part of a broader pattern of Russian aggression targeting Ukraine's energy infrastructure. Over the past two years, Russia has aimed to disrupt the country's power grid and essential services, such as electricity, heat, and water supply. The destruction of the Trypilska plant follows previous attacks on energy facilities, including the Zmiivska TPP in the Kharkiv region and the occupation of the Vuhlehirska TPP in the Donetsk region.
Ukrainian President Volodomyr Zelensky criticized the lack of support from Western allies in providing air defense systems to protect against such attacks. He emphasized the urgent need for assistance to safeguard Ukraine's critical infrastructure and prevent further destruction. Despite the challenges, the Chairman of Centrenergo expressed confidence in the company's ability to overcome the crisis.
Ukraine's largest power company, DTEK, also reported significant damage to its power stations from Russian missile and drone attacks. Approximately 80% of the company's power-generating facilities have been destroyed in recent weeks, posing a severe threat to Ukraine's energy security.
The ongoing conflict has highlighted the vulnerability of Ukraine's energy sector and the urgent need for international support to defend against further attacks. Zelensky warned that allowing Russia to target energy infrastructure with impunity would have global repercussions, emphasizing the importance of immediate action to protect Ukraine's sovereignty and security.
