Russia And North Korea To Assault Ukrainian Positions

Russia's President Putin and North Korea's leader Kim meet in Amur region

A US official has reported that Russia has gathered a significant force, including North Korean troops, to launch an assault on Ukrainian positions in Russia's Kursk region in the coming days. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky mentioned the presence of approximately 11,000 North Korean soldiers in the region, where Ukraine's military operation into Russian territory has reached a standstill.

Reports indicate that around 50,000 Russian and North Korean troops are expected to participate in the upcoming assault. Despite initial denials, both Russia and North Korea have been strengthening their ties since Moscow's invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Ukraine's invasion of the Kursk region earlier this year marked the first incursion into Russian territory since World War II. However, Russia continues to advance steadily in eastern Ukraine, prompting concerns about facing one of the most powerful Russian offensives since the conflict began.

Moscow has been employing tactics such as long-range drone strikes on Ukrainian cities and using decoy drones to overwhelm Ukraine's air defenses. Ukrainian officials have expressed the urgent need for long-range weapons to counter the escalating situation involving the intervention of another state in the conflict.

Amidst these developments, questions loom over Ukraine's future, especially with the impending inauguration of US President-elect Donald Trump. Trump's promises to end the war quickly have raised uncertainties about continued US support for Kyiv.

Following the US election, Russian President Vladimir Putin expressed readiness for dialogue with the incoming US administration. Trump and Zelensky had a positive conversation post-election, with tech billionaire Elon Musk also joining the call briefly.

Furthermore, the Biden administration recently lifted restrictions on American military contractors deploying to Ukraine to assist in maintaining and repairing US-provided weapons systems. This move marks a significant shift in US policy towards supporting Ukraine in the ongoing conflict with Russia.
