Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson has thrown 10 touchdown passes to wide receiver Courtland Sutton in 2023. Only one QB-WR duo in the NFL has more touchdowns this year (Tua Tagovailoa and Tyreek Hill have 12).
After they connected on a 46-yard touchdown pass in a 24-7 win over the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday, Wilson spoke about his connection with the receiver.
“I think the nonverbal communication is everything, obviously the verbal and the nonverbal,” Wilson said. “As we watch film and study film throughout the whole week and the offseason everything else, just talking about ball you know these guys. These receivers, tight ends and running backs everybody offensive minded guys are obsessed with the game and we get to play with guys like Sutton, who cares about the game.
“His intellectual understanding of what to do in certain situations. Really trying to create the script — because a scramble is going to happen in the game, especially when our line is blocking the way they did today. He thought top down and said let’s go deep, let’s take a shot. I tried to give him a chance and he made a great play.”
With 53 receptions for 699 yards through 13 games, Sutton has already smashed his previous career high for touchdowns in a single season (six in 2019). With four games remaining, Sutton will look to build on the first double-digit touchdown season of his career.
