Russell Martin says Swansea City ownership group have expressed interest in extending his deal

Russell Martin says Swansea City's ownership group have expressed an interest in extending the head coach's contract with the club.

The Swans signed off their 2022/23 season with a stunning 3-2 comeback win over West Brom in front of new chairman Andy Coleman.

The American has been tasked with the day-to-day running of the club and will immediately oversee a range of key matters across the coming months - including transfers and contract matters.

Martin is now poised to enter the final 12 months of his deal with the club and has regularly stated his desire to remain in south Wales. And following his side's triumph over the Baggies, the 37-year-old says he has been informed by Coleman that the majority owners have suggested a new deal could be on the table soon.

"He said he likes what we're doing," Martin said of chairman Coleman. "There's maybe other priorities at the moment but we'll see. He's said the ownership group have expressed an interest in trying to extend the contract, so we'll have to wait and see.

"I have a year left. We've got guys out of contract, so that's got to be a real priority. Whatever comes first, I don't know. We'll just have to wait and see."

It comes as Martin was linked with the Leicester City role, with reports stating the Swans boss would be one of the leading contenders to replace Dean Smith should the Foxed be relegated from the Premier League.

"I think I've been linked with a few jobs since I've been here," Martin said of the rumours. "I make the same of that as I did when we spoke about that in October when we had our last nice run. I wasn't linked with anyone when we were on a tough run.

"I presume that's only a positive thing that we've been on a good run. I've said to you all along, we love being here, our families are really settled, we love working with the people we're working with.

"The club's biggest strength is the people here on the ground. It's amazing how much they've bought into us and what we're doing. I know after four weeks they thought it was mental, but now, hopefully it's something they really enjoy. However long it lasts, it'll hopefully be something they look back at with a real fondness and happiness."

Victory over Carlos Corberan's outfit saw Swansea extend their unbeaten run to nine matches, their best sequence under the current regime.

Indeed, the Swans have amassed 23 of the final 27 points on offer this term to ensure they finished 10th in the Championship - five places higher than they managed last time out.

And Martin revelled in the way his young squad sign off what has been a testing season.

“It’s a really nice feeling. It was a really good game, two really good teams. They are coming here fighting to get into the play-offs," he said of the final-day win.

“We are playing for nothing in terms of trying to get into the play-offs, but the lads played like they were playing everything. That was the best bit for me the mentality – the courage after a mistake for the first goal.

“I will be frustrated for a while to finish that close [to the play-offs]. But what I would say that with everything that’s been thrown at us this season, the youth of the squad, January, I am so proud of the players and what they have done.

“I am so proud of the way the teams looks and the way we have grown.”
