Russell Martin's clear behind-the-scenes message to Swansea City players as training ground footage released

Russell Martin has given a rare glimpse into his behind-the-scenes talks with Swansea City players after being fitted with a microphone during a training session.

The Swansea head coach enjoyed a full pre-season with his players this summer having arrived on the opening day of August last year - just six days before his side's opening day clash with Blackburn Rovers.

However, the squad is far better placed now for having worked under Martin and his coaching staff for the last 12 months, and ahead of the current campaign, Martin agreed for one of his tactical and motivational speeches to be recorded.

The 36-year-old - along with his coaching staff, including assistant Matt Gill - can be seen gathered in front of the players following the conclusion of a training session at their Fairwood base prior to the 1-1 draw with Rotherham United.

And in the 108-second long clip, the Swansea boss discusses the reasons behind some of his methods and urges those in front of him to peak during training sessions in a bid to ensure they are ready to perform on matchdays.

"When you guys have control and you dominate the ball, they're [opposition] going to run," he says. "At some point, guess what, they're not going to be able to run any more. You're just going to play with composure, detail and a connection with each other and the game is yours.

"So the painful bit is supposed to be here, on the training pitch so that, on Saturday, when you step over the white line, you understand what's coming, you're ready for what's coming and you know how to solve the problem.

"So the focus is not about fear of the opposition, it's being ready and aware of what's coming.

"We train the way we are going to play. Always. The important bits on Saturday, out of possession, is you have to go and affect that, make sure it's coming with no quality at all.

"You have to be ready to defend your box with a mentality and willing to crush space. You have to be willing to run. And then, more than ever, when you have control of the ball, look after it. The ball is ours, and you make sure, when you are there, you can go and hurt them with energy and intensity."

Martin reached one year in charge of the Swans on Monday. His troops return to action against Blackburn at the Swansea.com Stadium on Saturday.
