Russell Martin in fresh Joel Piroe transfer update as Swansea City boss makes 'it'll be really late' statement

Swansea City head coach Russell Martin maintains there have been "no discussions" over Joel Piroe as the clock ticks down to the transfer window deadline.

Piroe scored his second goal of the season against Stoke City on Wednesday night, with the Dutchman starting to look his old self again after a slow start to the campaign.

There has been speculation surrounding his future for months, such was his form last term, but Martin says there have been no calls so far for the former PSV man. There has, however, been interest in Piroe's team-mate Michael Obafemi, who is subject of a bid from Burnley.

Martin admitted that if there is any interest in Piroe, it will be cutting it fine before tonight's 11pm deadline.

"If it is it'll be really late. There's been no discussions, there's been no club calling up," he said.

"I hope not, he played in his preferred position tonight. It's a really difficult balance when him and Michael are two of your top players. He deserved the chance to play in his preferred position, he took it and he looked like he was going to score again.

"He was outstanding. I'm really pleased for him. Now Michael and him have got to maintain a good level, and Michael has to force Joel back out of that position. Joel's flexibility has meant we can get Michael in the team, but at the same time, when he poses such a goal threat, we just wanted him back in the top line and thankfully he's rewarded the decision."
