Russell Martin coy on next Rangers manager speculation

Russell Martin has delivered a guarded response when addressing his future as a manager following recent links with Rangers.

The former Gers defender was Southampton's head coach earlier this season having guided them to the Premier League via play-off final glory last summer.

However, the 39-year-old lasted just 16 games in the post before being sacked by Saints.

Their fortunes have hardly improved under new boss Ivan Juric, and Saints are on course for the worst-ever points tally recorded in EPL history.

So, Martin's reputation as a possession-based, modern football coach appears to have remained mainly intact, having previously done a good job at Swansea City and MK Dons.

Rangers are on the lookout for a new permanent manager, however, this recruitment process will only be carried out once the takeover by 49ers Enterprises is completed.

Barry Ferguson is in interim charge of the first team until the end of the season.

Given Martin is out of work and used to play for the Ibrox side, this had led to speculation that he could return as head coach.

Appearing on Sky Sports' Monday Night Football, he was directly asked where we'll see him next, with Rangers also mentioned in the line of questioning.

"I think I am realistic," Martin coolly said. "I don't think I will get another Premier League chance right now.

"I think like most managers that come up from the Championship - 'not quite good enough for the Premier League'.

"It's maybe unfair on the managers that get there at times because you are there with a squad that has been so successful the year before but isn't quite ready for the Premier League.

"There is only two managers that have been taken out of the Championship for a long time - Nathan Jones and Graham Potter. The others have to get there and try and stay there and really get success.

"I really don't know (where is next). I am open to working abroad, in England again - I want to work back in the Premier League now I have got a taste of it.

"I want to get back there and I believe I can, so we will just have to wait and see."
