British police have charged comedian and media personality Russell Brand with multiple counts of sexual assault, including one count of rape, following an 18-month investigation.
The charges include one count of rape, indecent assault, oral rape, and two counts of sexual assault between the years of 1999 and 2005. In a media release, UK police stated that the charges related to allegations that were made by four separate women.
Detectives began their investigation into Brand following a number of allegations made against Brand in 2023, which were reported by UK media including Channel 4 and The Sunday Times.

“The Met’s investigation remains open and detectives ask anyone who has been affected by this case, or anyone who has any information, to come forward and speak with police,” the media release read.
Brand will appear at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London on May 2.
The comedian has denied the allegations in a video posted to Instagram on Friday, captioned “my response”.
“We’re so fortunate, in a way, to live in a time where there is so little trust in the British government,” he began.
“We’re very fortunate for this to be happening in a time where we know that the law has become a kind of weapon to be used against people, institutions, and sometimes entire nations.”
Brand goes on to criticise current UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer and his government.

“I was a fool before I lived in the light of the Lord,” Brand continued.
“I was a drug addict, a sex addict, and an imbecile. What I never was, was a rapist. I’ve never engaged in non-consensual activity. I pray that you can see that by looking in my eye.”
In 2023, Channel 4 released an episode from their documentary series, Dispatches, that reported Brand had been accused of different counts of rape and sexual assault from 2006 and 2013.
Brand is known for appearing in films including Get Him to the Greek and Despicable Me, as well as his ill-fated relationship with US popstar Katy Perry.
His film career began to falter in the 2020s, and has since primarily appeared on his live internet show where he discusses his opinions on global politics.
