Rural fire boss to retire after five years in charge

The NSW Rural Fire Service's top official will retire after the coming bushfire season, bringing an end to a lengthy career that involved a key role in fighting the devastating Black Summer blazes.

Commissioner Rob Rogers on Thursday announced he would hang up the hose after a 45-year career, having served in the top role since July 2020.

He was deputy commissioner through the disastrous 2019-20 Black Summer, playing a key role in co-ordinating the NSW's response.

Mr Rogers also spearheaded the implementation of the new Australian fire danger rating system in 2022, which was hailed at the time as the most significant change in 50 years.

"It has been a privilege to serve alongside such dedicated individuals and witness their unwavering commitment to protecting our communities," he said in a statement.

"I have a deep sense of gratitude for having had the opportunity to contribute to the safety and wellbeing of our state."

Emergency Services Minister Jihad Dib said Mr Rogers also showed how agencies could work together when the RFS supporting the State Emergency Service during widespread floods in 2022.

"As commissioner, he has focused on the development of new and enhanced RFS capabilities and on ensuring volunteers have the resources and equipment they need to perform their roles and return home safely," Mr Dib said.

"He has stood with firefighters through some of the most challenging bushfire seasons the state has seen."

Mr Rogers joined the RFS in 1979 and served 16 years as a volunteer before moving to a salaried position.
