Rupert Everett has said he didn’t feel guilty about his affair with the late presenter Paula Yates during her marriage to singer Bob Geldof.

The actor, known for starring in My Best Friend’s Wedding, The Happy Prince and Shrek, opens up about his six year relationship with Yates on Thursday’s episode of Piers Morgan’s Life Stories.

Everett, 61, said he loved Yates - who died in 2000 from a heroin overdose - and spoke candidly about being involved with a married woman.

Everett said he was “very very close” with YatesPA

Yates was in a relationship with Geldof, who is now 69, for 20 years. The couple married in 1986, a decade after they first got together.

There were accusations of infidelity throughout their marriage - which came to an end in 1995, with the pair divorcing a year later.

In a preview of the episode, Everett confirmed he was linked to the Big Breakfast host “before, during and after” her relationship with Boomtown Rats singer Geldof.

He said: “We were very, very close, I must say, for a long time, and she’s someone that I adored and still do. “

He added: “I think I was in love with her. I adored her.”

Morgan then asks the actor: “How did you square off Bob in all this?”

The actor said he “just ignored him” and that the Live Aid organiser knew about the affair.

When Piers asked if he felt guilty, Everett said: “I don’t know, I think it would be for her to feel guilty, not me.”

In the episode, Everett also discusses how he could have died after going to the same pub as serial killer Dennis Nilsen.

The actor revealed he went to the same bar as the murderer – who killed at least 12 homeless or gay men and boys between 1978 and 1983.

“He was in the pub that I used to go to… Yeah, so I could be dead. He used to go to the Coleherne, which was this leather bar…”

Nilsen was recently portrayed by David Tennant in ITV’s drama Des.

Piers Morgan’s Life Stories airs Thursdays at 9pm on ITV.
