Drag performer George Ward, better known as Cherry Valentine, has died at the age of 28. Ward is known for his appearance on the second season of RuPaul’s Drag Race UK in 2021.
A statement from his family said: “It is with the most heart-wrenching and deepest sadness to inform you that our George – Cherry Valentine – has tragically passed away. This will come as a profound shock to most people and we understand there is no easy way for this to be announced.
“As his family, we are still processing his death and our lives will never be the same. We understand how much he is loved and how many lives he has inspired and touched. All we ask is for your patience and your prayers in this time. We love you Georgie.”
Ward was a member of the Traveller community and fronted the BBC documentary Gypsy Queen and Proud. He also appeared in music videos for stars like Charli XCX and performed across the UK in shows.
Cherry Valentine was eliminated in episode two of his season and he lip synced against runner up Tayce in a performance of Memory from Cats. Despite his early exit, Ward was a well liked RuGirl with over 53k followers on Twitter.
Before his drag career, Ward was a qualified mental health nurse and still worked in the NHS. He aided with the Covid vaccine roll out last year as well as releasing his own single Aesthetic.
Fans and other drag performers have tweeted their support and love for Ward, many saying they are “heartbroken” and “shocked”. Seddera Side said: “Rest in Peace to one of the most talented and beautiful queens in the world! Cherry Valentine you will be so so so missed!”
